Psoriasis

Psoriasis is a chronic, noncontagious auto-immune skin disease characterized by patches of abnormal red, pink or purple skin and dry, itchy skin.

What is it?

Psoriasis is an immune-activated skin disorder that triggers an accelerated multiplication of skin cells, leading to skin inflammation. It's not infectious and cannot be transmitted between individuals. Most people suffering from psoriasis exhibit red, inflamed skin areas with thick, silver-white scales. These areas are typically itchy, often accompanied by a burning feeling and discomfort. The skin around these patches generally feels dry, with a tendency to crack and bleed. Stiff, swollen joints are also a frequent occurrence.

The symptoms of psoriasis can vary significantly and typically undergo cycles that may persist for numerous days or even weeks. Psoriasis is usually a chronic condition. Our highly skilled dermatologists at Clarkston Dermatology provide treatment for psoriasis across all skin tones in Clarkston and Oxford, Michigan.

How is it treated?

Although there isn't a recognized cure, our certified dermatologists at Clarkston Dermatology can assist in managing symptoms of your psoriasis using topical treatments like corticosteroids and oral retinoids. Depending on your unique case, our team may also suggest other remedies such as salicylic acid, coal tar, retinoids, or even straightforward solutions like aloe vera. In select situations, we'll suggest and provide light/phototherapy to alleviate symptoms. For more serious instances, our dermatologists in Clarkston and Oxford, Michigan, can prescribe oral or injectable medications that help in curbing your immune system.
