What Are Angiomas and Hemangiomas?
Sometimes people develop red growths on the skin made of blood vessels called an angioma. While this is a benign mass, meaning non-cancerous, it is sometimes unsightly and many wish to seek treatment. Treatment is often not required unless the area is bleeding or you dislike its appearance. An angioma can develop into different types, including Cherry Angiomas and Spider Angiomas.
Hemangiomas are tumors or lesions that are made up of blood or lymph vessels. These usually appear at birth or soon after. This type can grow quickly, return, and completely disappear. The areas that hemangiomas most frequently affect are on the face and neck. Again, the treatment for this condition is laser therapy.

How Are Angiomas and Hemangiomas Treated?
While these red spots are benign and usually do not require treatment, they can become problematic cosmetically or they may bleed frequently, in which case laser therapy may be advised. Laser therapy uses selective light energy that is absorbed by the pigment in the hemangioma which is converted to heat that destroys the blood vessels in the lesion. Multiple laser treatments are necessary to lighten the hemangioma and achieve desired results.
At Clarkston Dermatology, we use Nd:YAG laser treatment or the VBeam laser to destroy blood vessels in hemangiomas without damaging surrounding skin. Depending on the number of angiomas, between one and four treatments may be necessary.
What Is Laser Therapy Recovery Like?
Laser therapy is a safe and effective treatment for all types of hemangiomas, angiomas, and red spots. Nd:YAG laser treatment may cause some bruising and darkening of the lesion temporarily for up to one or two weeks. VBeam or pulsed dye laser treatment can cause redness and swelling for several days and bruising for up to two weeks.
